The Africana Studies Research Colloquium brings together scholars from different theoretical, empirical, and methodological perspectives in order to provide area faculty, students, and other community members with additional opportunities to engage cutting-edge research on, about, and involving communities of African descent. The colloquium gives particular emphasis to research addressing the varied ways in which race, ethnicity, culture, and politics impact communities of African descent within and beyond the continent of Africa.

Electric Orisha: Race, Media and Travel in Transnational Santeria
Dr. Aisha M. Beliso-DeJesus,Cultural and Social Anthropologist and
Assistant Professor of African American Religions at the Harvard
Divinity School. Professor Beliso- DeJesus will draw from nearly a decade of multi-sited ethnographic field research with Santeria practitioners in Cuba, Florida, California, and New York to discuss the recording of Santeria practice and its use in creating multi-lateral transnational linkages. Dr. Beliso-DeJesus will also discuss the emergence of religious travel/cosmopolitanisms as reconfigured and uneven notions of mobility.
