AFST 370 Black Women: Cross Culture Perspectives

A comparative examination of selected social and psychological factors that influence the lives of black women in Africa and the diaspora. Cultures include religion, language, clothing, values, etc. The footprint of women of African descent can be seen across the world in developed and emerging countries. There is no place on the globe that Black women have not made their mark. Historically, the study of African Descendent peoples has been through the lens of lack and pathology. The goal of this course will be to push back on those perceptions. The term Black is used to reflect people of African descent throughout the diaspora. In this course, students will research selected cultures that tell us about varied experiences captured in these groups.
