Second Generation Scholarship Award

Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the Second Generation Scholarship Award is to provide support to outstanding UMBC undergraduates who have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of minorities. The amount of the scholarship varies from year to year.

For the 2017-2018 academic year, three $1,000 scholarships will be given. The recipients will be notified in early November and the awards will be formally presented at the W.E.B. Dubois Lecture on Wednesday, November 8, 2017. Attendance at the lecture is mandatory. 

Criteria
The student selected to receive this award should:
  • Be a full-time, undergraduate, degree-seeking student in good standing at UMBC.
  • Have a minimum 2.75 GPA.
  • Have completed or enrolled in an Africana Studies Course.
  • Complete the online application form. 
  • Submit two letters of recommendation, one of which should be written by a UMBC faculty member from whom the applicant has taken a course.
  • Submit a transcript (unofficial transcripts are accepted).
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the advancement of minorities that is reflected by a pattern of service to the community, extracurricular activities, or other community involvement.
